Google+ Hangouts as a corporate video conferencing platform

We have staff throughout ten major cities in the USA, Canada, China and India as well as customers around the globe. Communication is always paramount when creating a strong team and a loyal customer base. The following is part of an email I sent out to my staff at Checkmate Geosynthetics but I thought it might be helpful to other business owners as well.

We have tried many different video and telephone conferencing systems over the years but I believe we have a winner with google+.

https://plus.google.com/

For those of you that don’t know of googles social media platform google+ here is my humble opinion. Google+ combines the personal social networking of Facebook with the ability to follow individuals, celebrities, business people and whomever else you can find or to be followed like twitter with the business networking of LinkedIn. If you then throw some cool video conferencing into the mix you end up having a social media platform that should take over the market. The thing is people have thousands of hours invested into their other accounts like Facebook so migrating them to Google+ is going to take awhile. The big thing I want to discuss tonight is the video conferencing portion of google+

Several things stand out for the “Hangouts” in google+
  • 1) You can video conference with up to ten users at once.
  • 2) The service is 100% free.
  • 3) You can video conference from you desktop or laptop computer through your web browser.
  • 4) After you download the free app. you can video conference call in on your iPhone, iPad 2 or Android phone in or out of a wifi zone..
  • 5) The hangout is specific to a user defined “circle” in my case I set up a Checkmate circle so when I create a hangout within that circle only the people I add to that circle can join the video conference.
  • 6) No web app to download, passwords or logins or ads or other irritating “free” service problems
  • 7) Once a hangout is created all one has to do is login to their google plus account look at the “stream” and click the button “join hangout”

My intent is to have the Checkmate “hangout” open whenever I’m at the office. I look at it as an open door to my office so people can pop in and out as needed. We can schedule group meetings with little or no notice. We will all be in Seattle next week but I see the times that we have all the team together physically few and far between. As we all know technology enhances our ability to communicate but ultimately we must meet people face to face, in the real world, to be effective. With that being said this tool will bring our far flung team together helping overall communication within the company.

Checkmate Geosynthetics appoints Jim Penman to VP of Sales USA

Checkmate Geosynthetics Appoints Jim Penman as Vice President of Sales

Vancouver, British Columbia Canada  - 24th October 2011

Checkmate Geosynthetics Ltd, a worldwide manufacturer and supplier of geosynthetic soil reinforcement and stabilization solutions, today announced it has appointed Jim Penman as the company’s Vice President of Sales USA. In his new role, Penman will be responsible for Checkmate’s full-range of geosynthetic system products within the US market.

Penman began his career in geosynthetics seventeen years ago when he joined one of the world’s leading geogrid manufacturers. During the intervening years he has occupied a range of positions in design/technology, sales and marketing. Although he readily acknowledges that his first love is sales, Penman is also regarded as one of the industry’s leading experts in the application of geogrid technology. He continues to serve as a geosynthetics expert for the American Railroad Engineering and Maintenance-of Way Association (AREMA) and has presented regularly at several major international conferences.

President Bradley E. Stuart says “Checkmate Geosynthetics is proud to announce that Jim Penman has joined our team as VP of Sales for our USA operations. Jim’s wealth of experience and his excellent standing in the geosynthetics industry combine to form one of the key components that helps to propel Checkmate ahead of any other competition in the market. Jim is a key team player in our North American and global strategies. Checkmate continues to expand its global reach and tighten its grip on markets already held. We welcome Jim to our team”

“The geosynthetics industry in the US continues to grow and its geogrid component is about to experience a new dawn” Penman said. “I am extremely proud and privileged to be joining a company that is primed and ready to capitalize on the wealth of new opportunities that will present themselves in the coming years”.

Penman will continue to reside in Alpharetta, GA where he has lived with his family for the last 8 years.  Jim can be reached directly -  Jim@checkmategeogrid.com

I have yet to see a death case among the dozens coming to the Supreme Court on eve-of-execution stay applications in which the defendant was well represented at trial… People who are well represented at trial do not get the death penalty.
Thanks for the experience @taylorswift13. Tonight was one of those moments you try to take the entire experience in. Kate (11) and Ella’s (13) first music concert. They have been to and preformed in countless plays and performances but nothing like we saw tonight. We went to see Taylor Swift and although her music isn’t MY first choice to be playing poolside, my girls love her and I was hoping that this would be a positive experience for them. We were not disappointed. I was amazed at the incredible show she put on and the positive energy. It’s one of those times you get to see your kids eyes wide open taking in the entire scene like a five year old on Christmas morning. Watch them connect on some level with the performer. I’m so lucky to be able to share those moments with my girls. You never know what moment might light a spark of creative imagination with your kids. I believe tonight was one of those moments. It’s so nice to see a performer like Taylor Swift that can be honest and pure with her music and connect with her audience. The stage was amazing, graphics, sets and the live interaction with the audience was something I’d never seen before. You could text or email Swift and see your pictures and messages on the big screens before the main show went on. We are so lucky today to be able to show our children so many different positive experiences. We truly are blessed to live in this part of the world. Thanks Ms. Swift for a defining moment in my girl’s lives.
